Harmonizing Industrial Vibes with Academic Functionality
The University of Akron's Center for Precision Manufacturing embarked on a renovation project generously supported by a donation from Timken to Akron University.
The project was a collaboration with DS Architecture and LVK Design, and involved the renovation of a 15,000 sq ft space, blending industrial aesthetics with classroom and administrative functionalities. The primary functions of the space included a computer lab, a grad student collaboration area, a conference room, and testing and measurement facilities, including X-ray equipment.
Creating an Engaging Environment within an Industrial Space
+Detail's initial stages involved conducting a thorough analysis of the existing construction and remaining elements within the building. The design had to seamlessly blend the renovated areas with the untouched spaces, creating a cohesive and budget-driven outcome. With a high bay area similar to a warehouse, the structural elements, such as columns and beams, were painted in bold colors, adding visual interest.

Brand Alignment and Material Selection
The design effectively spoke to the client's brand by creating a distinct identity for the Center for Precision Manufacturing while acknowledging its partnership with Timken. Materials were selected based on budget, performance, and compatibility with the concept.
Incorporating Innovation
+Detail sought to incorporate innovation by thoroughly researching the precision manufacturing process and incorporating its principles into the design elements through color, pattern and textures throughout the project.
